What is the intent of our Music curriculum?

To enable everyone to flourish and achieve their ambition at our school, the History curriculum takes a multi-faceted approach that embraces local, national and global partnerships and will:

  • Work towards Music being valued as a powerful and unique form of communication that may influence the way pupils think, feel and act; music can inspire and motivate where other stimuli are ineffective. As a vehicle for personal expression, it promotes emotional development, encourages creativity and thereby makes a valuable contribution to the wider curriculum; it builds self-respect and supports developing self-control and positive social attitudes.
  • Teaching of Music enables children to listen to, create, play, perform and enjoy a wide range of music; children develop skills to appreciate different musical forms and begin to make informed judgements about the quality of music. Children will
  • Music reflects culture and society, and opportunity is provided for a range of culturally and historically diverse musical experiences which help build understanding of the context of music making, both in the past and present and from different localities around the world.

At Dunholme St Chads we use Charanga to support our music teaching, this is an online music scheme with lots of visual aids and interactive resources to support your children's learning about music. Take a look at our music curriculum overview to find out what units your child will be covering in music this year (TBC).

Each year the Year 3 and 4 children have a term of whole class instrumental tuition with an experienced musician. The children have enjoyed learning the ukulele or djembe drum during their whole class music sessions and showcasing their new skills with the rest of the school and their parents.

We are happy to announce that we have introduced whole class tuition into KS1 this year with the children in Year 1 accessing the IMP Infant Music Programme.

During our whole school singing sessions, the children will learn songs  related to the season or important festivals. During the Christmas season EYFS and KS1 perform their Nativity production with lots of singing and also invite parents to join in with the Christmas sing-a-long.

To support our music teaching and provide engaging opportunities for our pupils, we often invite guests into our school. Previously we have been able to provide a djembe drumming workshop which the children really enjoyed during our 'Arts week',  as well as inviting musicians into school to share their talents, skills and answer any questions the children may have. Most recently we have had the Choristers from the Cathedral and a visit from a violinist.
