ANTI-BULLYING WEEK

Every year, we take part in Anti-bullying week to ensure that children understand what bullying is and how it can be prevented. The children take part in age appropriate lessons to discuss how we can celebrate differences and why our differences make the world a better place. We discuss how bullying can effect others socially, emotionally, mentally and physically and they know who they can talk to if they are having problems.

Our younger children learn about the P.A.N.T.S. rule to safeguard themselves and our older children take part in workshops run by the NSPCC to learn about how they can protect themselves online.

The children are always excited to take part in 'Odd Socks Day' which helps them to recognise that we are 'all valued for who we are'.

What is the intent of our PSHE curriculum?

To enable everyone to flourish and achieve their ambition at Dunholme St Chad’s, our PSHE curriculum takes a multi-faceted approach that embraces local, national and global partnerships and will:

  • Include planned elements of the whole curriculum that promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of children at our school and prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
  • Teach pupils what is meant by a healthy lifestyle, including how to maintain their physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing.
  • Ensure pupils understand how to maintain a variety of healthy relationships, within a range of social and cultural contexts.
  • Teach pupils how to respect themselves and others and the importance of responsible behaviours and actions.

PSHE Enrichment

Classes look to enrich the PSHE curriculum wherever possible, through incorporating it into our thematic approach to learning. This will include things like visitors into school, educational visits and applying PSHE concepts to their learning about other cultures/civilizations.

Character Development

At school, we want to help the children become responsible, courageous, honest and kind human beings.  Character development is about building good habits, and habits take time to form.  We are all works in progress!  We may not know all of the challenges and opportunities our children will face, but we know that these virtues will help them thrive in any situation.

Building character is the work of a lifetime. Primary children can start to develop habits that will help them to thrive in school and university, in work and life beyond including – resilience, confidence, responsibility, honesty, compassion and gratitude.

We do this in our school by –

  • Creating a safe and supportive learning environment
  • Celebrating pupil’s progress, not just successes
  • Providing opportunities for goal setting and reflection
  • Developing a sense of belonging within the school community
  • Understanding and celebrating diversity

Our curriculum is infused with opportunities for children to develop their character strengths and virtues.  These are complimented through our Collective worship and class reflections.  Each year group is taught weekly PSHE lessons that teach children explicitly about the character virtues. Together, discrete and embedded learning gives the children the knowledge, language and understanding to develop their own character development and prepare them for life in modern Britain.

We celebrate diversity through our PSHE lessons, learning about role models and through reading a diverse range of texts.

PSHE Partnerships

Our PSHE curriculum is working inline with the National PSHE Association which is is the national body for personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education. It helps us to maintain our high standards so that every pupil enjoys good PSHE education. We are able to benefit from high quality teaching materials, training, conferences and support from their team of dedicated Subject Specialists.

Our staff are part of the LEAD Hub PSHE Networking group to share ideas and work collaboratively to continue driving forwards the impact of PSHE across the school.

We use age appropriate interactive resources from Growing Up with Yasmine and Tom to help us deliver our Sex Education curriculum.
