What is the intent of our PE curriculum?

To enable everyone to flourish and achieve their ambition at our school, the PE curriculum takes a multi-faceted approach that embraces local, national and global partnerships and will:

  • Strive for a curriculum that is accessible to all and develops the whole child. Encourage children to be conscious of the complexity and diversity of individuals and societies in the world around them and supporting equality for all in sport.

  • It nurtures spirituality, curiosity, creativity and enjoyment. Our golden threads of ambition and aspiration, continuity and change and equality and diversity weave through all areas of our PE curriculum.

  • Challenge and support children through high quality teaching and learning to enable them to be the best that they can be and encourages them to improve and engage in competitive sports and activities.

  • Be accessible for all pupils, to support them to develop as successful learners. PE is an integral part of school practices allowing all children in the school to gain a sense of achievement and develop positive attitudes towards themselves and others.

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities. and give every pupil a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active.

  • Promote active and healthy lifestyles, physical skills, physical development and knowledge of the body in action, which supports their health and fitness and lead healthy, active lives.

  • Engage all pupils in a programme of PE that encourages fitness, improves their strength and ensures they are physically active for sustained periods of time.

Enrichment activities

In our PE lessons, we use the Real PE scheme of learning.  This is a totally new and holistic approach that makes PE and gym relevant, meaningful and challenging for EVERY child.  It uses a 6 cog approach as shown below.  This allows teachers to focus on one of these cogs in their lessons and use this for assessment purposes. Each year group has a different set of resources, including an assessment focus, warm up activities, skills and application.

Sports Week

In term 6, we have a Sports week.

Last year, we focused on being a "good sportsperson.  The children felt that this meant:

  • listening to coaches and referees
  • playing fair
  • respecting other teams
  • encouraging others
  • If you win, don't boast about it
  • If you don't win, accept this gracefully.

It has been wonderful to see all the children embracing this as they joined in with the week's activities.

Sports Day and Athletics morning

It is always great to see all the children take part in competitive sport and earn points for their house team.  All our events promote teamwork and motivation.

Our races include:

  • sack race
  • beanbag race
  • egg and spoon
  • sprint
  • hurdle
  • relay

House teams compete against each other to win the house cup.
