What is the intent of our science curriculum?

To enable everyone to flourish and achieve their ambition at our school, the science curriculum takes a multi-faceted approach that embraces local, national and global partnerships and will:

  • Be an inspiring, aspirational, rigorous and practical subject where children use their creativity and imagination.
  • Develop children’s scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • Help children to understand science as a process developed through reasoning and that logical conclusions made are based upon observable facts.
  • Nurture children’s curiosity and knowledge of the methods of science by encouraging them to investigate their own questions using the five scientific enquiry types.
  • Enable children to apply their subject knowledge in other areas such as mathematics, design and technology, engineering, computing and art.
  • Encourage our children to learn how to take risks, become ambitious, resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
  • Include the evaluation of the past and present scientists, so that our children develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.
  • Ensure children know science is the study of the natural world and that technology is where we apply science to solve problems and carry out tasks.
  • Promote ambition with science as a possible STEM career pathway.
  • Promote and maintain a diverse, inclusive and stimulating environment, where we celebrate and value everyone for their differences in thought, background, experience and perspectives and challenge inequality.

Primary Science Quality Mark

Primary Science Quality Mark is a one-year school improvement programme for primary science, which provides professional development for new and experienced subject leaders each year. PSQM enables confident, knowledgeable, reflective leadership which results in an improvement in the way in which science is planned and taught across the whole school.

We are proud to have achieved the guilt award from PSQM to celebrate all of our amazing science work.

Science Enrichment

We are proud of our enrichment of the science curriculum across the school. Science does not take place just within the classroom. Every year we take part in the National Science and Engineering Week where our children visit local industries to find out about the world of science. We have science workshops in school and invite our parents in to see what we have been learning.

Science Partnerships

We are part of the Association for Science Education to enhance our teaching and learning of science. https://www.ase.org.uk/

This association seeks to create a powerful voice for science education professionals in order to make a positive and influential difference to the teaching and learning of science throughout the UK and further afield.

We use STEM to support our science teaching and to help develop staff subject knowledge. We use the STEM ambassadors to enrich our science curriculum by visiting the school to talk to the children about careers in science.
