What is the intent of our design and technology curriculum?

To enable everyone to flourish and achieve their ambition at our school, the design and technology curriculum takes a multi-faceted approach that embraces local, national and global partnerships and will:

  • Be an inspiring, aspirational, rigorous and practical subject where children use their creativity and imagination.
  • Allow children to design and make products solving real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, values and wants.
  • Enable children to apply their subject knowledge in other areas such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.
  • Encourage our children to learn how to take risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
  • Include the evaluation of the past and present technology, so that our children develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.
  • Enable children to apply their subject knowledge in other areas such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.

  • Promote ambition with science as a possible STEM career pathway.
  • Promote and maintain a diverse, inclusive and stimulating environment, where we celebrate and value everyone for their differences in thought, background, experience and perspectives and challenge inequality.

Design and Technology Enrichment

We are proud to take part in the National Science and Engineering Week each year. We focus on problem solving skills to enable children to ask questions and test their ideas. We work with local businesses as well as our local secondary school to enrich our work.

We also take part in yearly enterprise projects where children investigate, design, plan, make, sell and evaluate products. They develop a wide range of enterprise skills including team work and budgeting. They also develop our golden thread of aspiration and ambition.

Our partnerships

We are members of the Design and Technology Association who provide opportunities for children to develop their capability, combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to create quality products.

We also work with STEM who provide high quality support to educators, ensuring young people get the best possible STEM education (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
