History at dunholme st chad's

What is the intent of our History curriculum?

To enable everyone to flourish and achieve their ambition at our school, the History curriculum takes a multi-faceted approach that embraces local, national and global partnerships and will:

  • Challenge and support all pupils in gaining a coherent knowledge and understanding of people, events and contexts from a range of historical periods, including significant events in the history of the wider world, through high-quality teaching and inclusive practices.
  • Encourage pupils to develop an appreciation, curiosity and enjoyment of learning about the past through the evaluation of a range of primary and secondary sources; inspiring them to think creatively and critically by questioning and challenging their validity and usefulness in historical enquiry.
  • Ensure the sequencing of our history curriculum allows pupils to make meaningful thematic and cross-curricular links through their learning of different historical periods and our curriculum’s golden threads of: ambition and aspiration; continuity and change; and equality and diversity.
  • Inspire children to pursue excellence in their learning of the past and to become engaged, motivated and curious learners that can reflect on changes and continuities in the wider social, cultural, political and religious contexts, within local, regional, national and international history.
  • Encourage children to be conscious of the complexity and diversity of individuals and societies in the world around them and inspire an ambition and aspiration to act upon their own role in supporting equality for all.
  • Develop and inspire a progression of understanding in the historical concepts of: change and continuity, cause and consequence, similarities and differences, interpretation and evidence, significance and making links across periods studied.

Enrichment

History learning does not just take place within the classroom. It is enriched through visits and visitors that generate an excitement and a love of learning in history, as well as inspiring creativity and curiosity in the pupils of Dunholme St Chad’s. Children are exposed to a diverse range of a first-hand experiences, such as: trips to local historical landmarks like Lincoln Castle, The Collection Museum and the International Bomber Command Centre; trips further afield to places such as the Holocaust Centre; and workshops or visitors coming into school. These valuable experiences deepen their understanding, spark their curiosity and help them to paint a clearer, more memorable picture of the past.
