What is the intent of our Art and Design curriculum?

To enable everyone to flourish and achieve their ambition at our school, the Art and Design curriculum takes a multi-faceted approach that embraces local, national and global partnerships and will:

  • Engage, inspire and challenge pupils
  • Equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design
  • Help pupils to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design
  • Teach pupils to know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
  • Encourage pupils to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • Support pupils to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • Help pupils to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • Teach pupils to know about great artists and craft makers
  • Promote ambition with art as a possible career choice
  • Promote and maintain a diverse, inclusive and stimulating environment, where we celebrate and value everyone for their differences in thought, background, experience and perspectives and challenge inequality.

How will we implement our Art and Design curriculum?

In Art and Design, we will implement our curriculum by providing a broad and balanced approach which will support each one of us to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. We do this through:

  • Motivating and giving children the opportunity to apply their knowledge across all subject areas to demonstrate a secure understanding, knowledge and skills.
  • Creating an accessible curriculum with real life, first-hand experiences for children to apply their art and design skills in a purposeful way.
  • Utilising a range of stimuli and resources that are inclusive of the different learning styles, needs and interests of the children, enabling all children – regardless of background or ability – to succeed and achieve their ambitions.
  • Developing children’s curiosity and teaching them the importance of asking their own questions and having the opportunity to answer them in a range of different ways to enable them to take risks and challenge existing stereotypes.
  • Teaching children about the different individuals who have used art and design to impact on the world around them and consider how this has had an impact on the world’s history and how art and design is a continuously changing subject.
  • Utilising local resources and skills to enable children to see art and design as a real-life purposeful subject and become responsible citizens in their own locality.
  • Enabling our children to take risks, problem solve and aspire to be aspirational and successful learners
  • Creating a mutually supportive learning environment where children are ambitious and feel supported to investigate and explore different styles and techniques, using the correct vocabulary to support their process.
  • Provide opportunities for children to ask questions in art and design and support this with sufficient technology to research and follow a line of enquiry.

Enrichment: Visits and Visitors, local context using community links and partnerships

Art and Design learning does not just take place within the classroom. It is enriched through:

Arts Week

For one week of the academic year we dedicate time to celebrate The Arts. During this week, the children participate in a number of different activities and events, including:

  • Visiting local secondary school William Farr. The children have used the Ceramics Workshop to create sculptures which have then been glazed and fired in their kiln.
  • Working with a Local Artist. We have invited Artists to work in our school and lead workshops. The Artists are able to teach their skills and share their work and sketch books with our pupils.
  • Working with the local community. We invite parents, family and friends into our school to lead and support activities within Arts Week.
  • Open Gallery in the hall. We open our hall for a gallery event to display a whole school project such as Self Portrait and Landscape. Parents, family and friends are invited.

Showcasing our artwork in the local community is very important to us. We routinely host a display to present our artwork at the Dunholme Village Fete.

Throughout the year our pupils also have opportunity to take part in art activities through cross curricular learning, such as a Hindu workshop.
